Free Speech

This song is one of the most interesting songs we have done.  The lyrics are a history of the constitutional law issues and the history of court decisions  regarding the freedom of speech in the United States.  The words are censored with tonactic beeps, but the text is printed so it can still be read and understood.  It shows the limitations on free speech, as the right is not absolute, as decided by the courts.  It provides an interesting insight to those who believe their rights are absolute.  But it proposes the argument that regulation of speech is just another form of welfare state.

Tips & Tricks on Politics (2005)

Lyrics

We're all born with the natural right to communicate

The things that we feel that we need to say

But, the state restricts and it regulates

Content, time manor and place

Words and expressions are ways to exchange

The information and ideas that we want to convey

Void of speech our identity goes without a trace

Can you tell your neighbor obsenities to his face

Can you encourage your friend to commit crimes of hate

Can you publish in print of your president's disgrace

Or declare that a movie star was never really straight

Freedom of speech is not consummate

The interests of the speaker and the state must be weighed

Let's let speech self regulate

In a free market of words and ideas

Free from the control of the welfare state

Can you set your nation's flag ablaze

Express your anger sybolically in a public place

Can you use a loudspeaker at 4:00 a.m. to assert your rage

With the government's never-ending fiscal malaise

The interest of the speaker and the state must be weighed

Can you lie about the effects of a new hairspray

Or how a product will change its user's fate

A word in fashion is "transparency"

When the government operates in glass houses for us all to see

What goes on is no longer cloaked in secrecy

Let's let speech self regulate

Let words and ideas determine their own fate

In an educated society we don't need to be

Protected from the dangers of the freedom of speech

Let the market self regulate

Let the best speech win at the end of the day

Nobody wants to listen to bullshit anyway
